Windout & Friends: Smoky Sunday Lunches To Light Up Devon’s Food Scene This Summer
A passion for food has seen Wood fired Canteen, Gill Meller and Windout Farm join forces to launch an eating collective that aims to put the heart back into breaking bread together.
Based on the simple idea that food tastes better with friends, this new monthly eating experience takes inspiration from Gill’s new book ‘Gather’ and sets out to bring people together over fire-cooked roasts, served with fresh sides selected from Devon’s larder of exceptional produce.
Tables will be laid for these lazy, smokey, family lunches at Windout Farm near Tedburn-St-Mary, with Woodfired Canteen founder Benedict Quinn and River Cottage’s Head Chef Gill Meller creating seasonal menus that celebrate the fat of the land and will include many ingredients grown and reared by Windout’s owners, Sam and Felicity Ursell. Commenting on the collaboration, Gill said: “Making a fire and cooking something good to eat over it, is for me, one of the simplest, and most natural ways to enjoy food. The process is timeless, I think it’s priceless and whenever I get the chance to do it, I revel in the quiet joy it brings me. I cant think of anywhere else I’d like to do this than at Windout with Ben, Sam and Felicity.”
Delivering exceptional wood-fired food experiences is what Ben and his team do, with the Woodfired Canteen well-established and greatly respected as smoky feast aficionados across the South West. Ben said: “We cannot wait to light the grills and welcome you to Windout Farm, expect smoke roasted organic chickens from the farm, food that fills your tables and gets you sharing with friends old and new. All in a setting that brings you back to memories of childhood holidays in the Westcountry and lazy, family Sunday lunches.”
Bringing people together to create memories over great food, Ben, Gill, Sam and Felicity share the view that food and family feed the soul. Having successfully tested the concept on loved ones earlier this spring, they are ready to invite new foodies and friends to the monthly gatherings. Felicity said: “We like nothing more than to share our farm and the produce on it, which is our motivation for doing this. Ben and Gill’s approach to food and cooking is so close to our hearts that we can’t think of two more talented chefs to kick start Windout & Friends, and we are honoured to be collaborating with them.”
Starting at 12 noon, the Windout & Friends experience will include a tour of the 900-year-old farm and games in the orchard. Expect local charcuterie and seasonal greens, smoky and salty organic chicken reared by Sam and Felicity and something sweet to round it all off.
Tickets are £30 for adults and £15 for Under 12s.
